GURI TOPOGRAPHY

The topography of Guri

The mountainous area in the northwestern part of Guri
belongs to Gwangju Mountain Range.

Gwangju Mountain

Range starts at Geumgangsan Mountain of Taebaek Mountain Range and stretches north-northeast and south-southwest to Seoul. Big mountains higher than 1,000 meters lie in the northeastern part of Gwangju Mountain Range, but its western part consists of low mountains, such as Bukhansan Mountain (836 m), Dobongsan Mountain (710 m), and Gwanaksan Mountain (629 m). Mountains get even lower across Hangang River. In other words, the mountainous area of Guri—including Achasan Mountain, which is the west border of Seoul; and Gureungsan Mountain, where East Nine Royal Tombs are located—is situated at the western edge of Gwangju Mountain Range.

The main bodies of water that pass by Guri are Hangang River and Wangsukcheon Stream. In addition to Hangang River, a total of 17 streams with a total length of 23 kilometers flow through Guri, including two large streams (Wangsukcheon Stream and Gyomuncheon Stream), two medium-sized streams (Baekgyocheon Stream and Umicheon Stream), and 13 small streams.

Wangsukcheon Stream, the most popular stream of Guri, originates in Sinpal-ri, Naechon-myeon, Pocheon-gun, Gyeonggi-do, flows south along Chugaryeong Gujugok Valley in the western part of Gwangju Mountain Range, and joins Hangang River in Topyeong-dong. Wangsukcheon Stream is also called Pungyangcheon Stream, Wangsuk, Wangtan, and Wangsannae.

Guri had one natural lake and three artificial lakes. Of the artificial reservoirs, only Imunan (Angol) Reservoir and Baekgyo Reservoir remains now.
