Donggureung Donggureung

Donggureung is Korea's largest site of royal tombs from the Joseon Dynasty, including Geonwonreung of King Taejo (Yi Seong Gye) and 17 other graves of kings and Queens. It is named so meaning. "There are nine royal tombs in the east." In about 490 acres of land, thens of different species of trees, including pine trees and oak trees, form a dense forest to build an urban resort. It attracts an average of 200,000 tourists every year.

Jangja Lake Park was created by Guri City by restoring Jangjamot in Topyeong District. In result of Guri's efforts to plant trees along the embankment with hiking trails and create an eco-friendly environment, it was selected ad " Successful Case of Natural Ecological Restoration" by the Ministry of Environment in February 2005. It is about 25 acres with a 3.6㎞-long hiking trail. its outdoor stage offers various concerts and exhibitions on weekends to attract local people for leisure life.

Mt. Acha, stretching from Seoul to Guri, is a low hill about 300m above sea level. It has a moderate terrain that is good for casual hiking. It has about 20 bastions that seem to be from the Age of Three Empires. In result of excavation, it was found to be a military relic of Goguryeo and designated as a national cultural heritage in 2004.

Guri Resource Collection Facility with Guri Tower is known as a successful case of overcoming collectivism and id visited by more than 80,000 government officials, office workers, and civilians from around the world. The chimneys of the incinerators have been converted into Korea's first observation deck and restaurant 100m above ground. There also are indoor pools, sauna, soccer field, and Futsal(mini soccer) field to accommodate the people of Guri for leisure activities.

The museum consists of a 300㎡ glass-covered greenhouse where insects can live all year and a 230㎡ Specimen Center with Auditorium. The garden grows various species of trees and flowers, offering habitats to butterflies, water beetles, beetles and other insects. The insects are coexisting with freshwater fish, aquatic plants, and insectivorous plants that also serve as the indicators of water pollution.

Great King Gwanggaeto's Monument

Great King Gwanggaeto's Monument

Grest King Gwanggaeto's Monument was established by Taewangreung in Guknae Castle in September of the 3rd year of King Jangsu, two years after the Great King passed away. It is Asia's largest four-sided stone monument that is 6.39m in height and 1.35~2m in width. The epitaph consists of 44 lines of 1,775 characters and is known as the best historical resource that tells us much about the history of Goguryeo.


This statue reproduced the appearance of Great King Gwanggaeto of Goguryeo who conquered a large part of East Asia. He is in his 30s and wearing the crown, holding in his right hand an egg with the engraving of three-legged crow(samjogo)which symbolizes the Sun.
